Solar Energy

Global warming and alternative energies are hot topics in the news today. There seems to be people who believe and preach everything from global warming is a sham to those that espouse moving into a cave and living off of berries for the rest of our lives.

The majority of people fall somewhere in the middle of these extremes. Most people want to recycle, they want to help the environment, but they realize that they must work with a realistic budget.

People don’t have enough money to completely change their lifestyles to comply with the wishes of the environmentalist movement. People need to be educated in knowing that there is a way to protect the environment and save money.

By installing one thermal solar heating system, 50 tons of carbon dioxide will be avoided every 20 years. What effect would 100 or 1,000 such systems have? Not only is this a great, feel good way to help the environment, it is affordable for most budgets as well.

Now, there are those few who are skepticle about solar power. They say that it doesn't work or isn't effective. They say that it isn't proven technology. What these people do not know is that solar collectors have been around for over 300 years (Horace de Saussure was able to build the first solar collector capable of boiling water in the 1700s). The technology and applications of solar energy have greatly improved since then.

One of the greatest breakthroughs in solar energy within the last decade is the creation of the evacuated tube solar collector which is 70% more efficient than the traditional flat plates. With the evacuated tube collector, more energy is collected in colder, windier and cloudier conditions producing 80-100 gallons of hot water at over 200 degrees. Think of the potential!

As always, solar power would not be complete without a word about flat panel photovoltaic collectors.  When people think of solar they visualize rooftops covered in black shiney glass, or perhaps a satellite orbiting the Earth, its black wings focus toward the sun. These are correct images, but solar has many more applications. Simple applications can include road construction signs, water heaters, even security systems. No matter what your needs might be, there is enough solar power to generate the electricity you need no matter the application, place, or quantity.
